Am I required to carry Worker’s Compensation Insurance
in the State of Massachusetts? If you have any employees you are required by
law. I have a small painting business and rather than pay
costly insurance bills, I pay all my workers as
sub-contractors. At tax
time I send them 1099s.
This means I’m not liable if they get
hurt…right? Wrong. This is an illegal practice. If someone works for you,
using your equipment, on a regular basis, they are
employees. They are
entitled to the security of Workers Compensation Insurance. Furthermore, all
Sub-Contractors need their own Liability Insurance and
Workers Comp for their
helpers. How much does Liability Insurance
Cost? Liability Insurance rates
are based on a percentage of payroll, sales, or both depending on
type of business. Can I buy Liability Insurance for one
job?? Not usually.
Policies are issued on an annual basis
